Tom Pearson’s artistic life in New York City began in the vibrant 1990s dance scene, training first at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center and Martha Graham Studios and later joining the team at Dance Theater Workshop. Alongside a professional performance career, he immersed himself in writing, choreography, and performance theory, ultimately earning a degree in Performance Studies from New York University and presenting his early choreography at venues like the Theater of the Riverside Church and Bridge for Dance.

A turning point came in the summer of 2001 when Pearson debuted his first work under the banner of Third Rail Dance at the New York International Fringe Festival. Later that year, he formally co-founded the company alongside Brian Weaver and Jennine Willett. Reconfigured in 2007 as Third Rail Projects with co-directors Zach Morris and Willett, the collective has since become a global leader in site-specific, immersive, and experiential performance.
