Susan Marshall & Company: Clear Skies Ahead

DANCE MAGAZINE —

March 2006

NEW YORK NOTEBOOK

Petra Van Noort tears up the floor and chews her shirt (above). Luke Miller places a teacup on the bottom of an inverted dancer whose legs cling to him. Such whimsical tableaux round out the evening-length Cloudless by Susan Marshall & Company, which premieres at Dance Theater Workshop, March 8-18. A series of short, unrelated dance poems that build in emotional force, Cloudless continues Marshall’s fascination with the subtlety and complexity of human behavior. Dancers revel in idiosyncratic gestures, nuzzle into quiet transitions, shuttle about in space-devouring duets, and converge on each other in an avalanche of partnered locomotion. — TOM PEARSON
